“The world is burning, join the fire”, these and many more slogans were part the demonstration last Saturday. During the past 2 weeks the dam square in Amsterdam was the home of the open assembly. during these weeks people voiced their opinions on the current corrupt governments and the poverty caused by the crisis. As planned it now was the day of the big demonstration, followed by another assembly.
The demonstration was quite popular with the crowd at the square, a lot of people agreed with the subject of the demonstration (a real democracy) and some joined the demonstration or tried out signs.
As samba band made the demonstration a lot more lively and joyful.
During the demonstration some people had talks on the subject.
A large part of the demonstration consisted of holding signs and chanting frases in english, spanish and dutch.
Here a dutch speaker gives a talk on how the crisis was causes by speculating bankers and now the rest of the world ends up paying for that.
Some of the protesters weren’t happy with the ‘static’ nature of the demonstration and decided to take a banner and make a tour of the square, together with some followers and the samba-band.
During the round of the banner and sambaband, the rest of the demonstration went on as usual.
Slowly it started to rain, but the people continued and the assembly was started.
There were more speakers, more discussions, but I decided to leave early and hide from the rain.
But the assembly continued, with as much liveliness as it did all week…
